How to Change Your Vehicle’s Tires

Elizabeth City, NC – According to a study conducted by NBC News, almost 60% of Americans don’t know how to change their vehicle’s tires. Instead, many rely on roadside assistance for a quick and easy solution in the event of a flat tire. Knowing how to change your vehicle’s tires is a necessary skill that all drivers should be able to do. While it is easy to rely on roadside assistance for help, there’s always a chance that you may get a flat tire in an area with no cell phone reception, leaving you on your own. Luckily, changing your vehicle’s tire is a quick and easy process to learn. Follow these guidelines if you wind up with a flat tire while you’re out on the road.

What You’ll Need to Fix a Flat

  • Spare Tire
  • Lug Wrench
  • Jack
  • Vehicle Owner’s Manual
In order to change a tire, you’ll need all of these items to safely and effectively replace your flat. All of the items listed should come with your vehicle and, besides your vehicle owner’s manual, are typically located in your trunk. If you can’t find these items, or if your car didn’t come with any of the items listed above, you should purchase new ones right away.
  • Find a Safe Place to Park: If you notice you have a flat tire, slowly reduce your speed and look for a safe and level place to park. Turn on your hazard lights, pull over into the safe area away from traffic, and apply your parking brake.
  • Remove Your Hubcap: If your vehicle has hubcaps that cover the lug nuts on the wheel, you’ll want to get it removed before you can get to work on your tire. Use the flat end of your lug wrench (the “L”-shaped tool in your tire changing kit) to pry your hubcap off. If you aren’t sure how to remove your hubcap, consult your vehicle owner’s manual.
  • Loosen the Lug Nuts: Using the other end of the lug wrench, unscrew the lug nuts on your vehicle’s tire (there should be six of them) until they’re loose. Do not completely remove the lug nuts just yet though. Also, if you’re having trouble loosening the lug nuts, use your foot or the weight of your body against the lug wrench if you need to.
  • Position Your Jack Under Your Vehicle: Look under your car for a clear area of exposed metal or a groove in your vehicle’s frame near the flat tire where you can place your jack. If you aren’t sure where to look, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to find the specific location to place your tire jack.
  • Raise Your Vehicle With the Jack: Carefully crank the lever on your vehicle’s jack to raise your vehicle until it’s at least six inches above the ground. While your vehicle is raised, it is extremely important to make sure you don’t put any part of your body underneath it.
  • Unscrew the Lug Nuts: Now that your vehicle is raised, it’s time to finish unscrewing your lug nuts. You should be able to do it by hand after loosening them up in step 3. Once removed, keep the lug nuts in a nearby location so you can have them on hand when you put the new tire on.
  • Remove Your Flat Tire: Grab your tire by the treads and carefully remove it until it’s free from your vehicle. Make sure to lay it flat so it doesn’t roll away.
  • Mount Your Spare Tire: Now, take your spare tire and line up the lug nut holes in the rim so that they align with the lug bolts (the metal bolts where you removed the lug nuts). Gently push your spare tire in until the lug bolts are visible through the rim of your tire.
  • Tighten the Lug Nuts: Put your lug nuts back on the lug bolts and tighten them by hand. Tighten them as much as you can.
  • Lower Your Vehicle: Slowly and carefully lower your vehicle on the jack so that it’s on a level plane again. After this, you’ll want to tighten the lug nuts one more time with your lug wrench for good measure.
  • Replace Your Hubcap: Your hubcap should fit in perfectly back on your spare but if it doesn’t, keep it with your flat tire after you put everything away.
  • Put Away Your Equipment: Put your flat tire, lug wrench, and jack in your vehicle’s trunk. Double check that you have everything and pat yourself on the back! You’ve changed your flat tire!

Your vehicle’s spare tire isn’t built to handle high speeds or long drives, so make sure you drive carefully to the nearest auto service technician. If you need to have your tire fixed or replaced, do not hesitate to call us or schedule an appointment for service. We’ll get your flat tire looked at, fixed, or replaced as soon as possible! Chevrolet to Offer Redline Special-Edition Trim on 9 Models

chevrolet-redline-special-edition-series

Elizabeth City, NC -Chevrolet to offer redline special-edition trim on 9 models.

Redline, featuring black wheels with red hash marks and blacked-out nameplates, Chevy logos and grilles, is the largest cross-brand special edition ever offered by Chevrolet, the General Motors brand said. It was set to unveil the special-edition vehicles at the Chicago auto show today.

Models with Redline options will include the Malibu LT, Traverse Premier and the Silverado Double Cab LT Z71.

The Redline special edition made its debut at the 2015 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

“Redline is another example of Chevrolet bringing SEMA concepts to showrooms,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet, in a statement. The SEMA show has proven to be a great way to identify customization trends in the industry, and quickly apply those trends to our most popular Chevrolet models.”

Chevrolet said the Redline would first be available for purchase on the Silverado, and orders can be taken at Chevy dealerships now. Each of the models with Redline editions will be made available by the end of the year. Pricing is not available, a Chevrolet spokesman said.

Sweeney said the Redline special-edition lineup could prove to be a boon for dealers.

“Since the introductions of special editions on vehicles like the Silverado and Camaro, vehicle average transaction prices have increased, time to turn has decreased and conquest rates have risen, which has contributed to making Chevrolet the fastest-growing brand in the industry two years in a row,” he said.

Other vehicles with available Redline trim will be the Cruze sedan and hatchback, Camaro, Trax, Equinox and Colorado.

Chevrolet Introduces 2017 Cruze Hatchback

Ahead of its debut at the North American International Auto Show, Chevrolet today introduced the 2017 Cruze Hatchback. Developed with all the technologies and dynamic driving attributes of the all-new 2016 Cruze sedan, the new hatch adds a functional and sporty choice for customers. It joins Colorado and Trax as the latest Chevrolets to push into new segments.

The Cruze Hatch has the same, class-leading 106.3-inch (2,700 mm) wheelbase as sedan models, but features a unique roof and rear-end structure – including wraparound taillamps and an integrated spoiler at the top of the liftgate. It opens to offer 22.7 cubic feet (643 liters) of cargo space behind the rear seat. With the rear seat folded, cargo space expands to 47.2 cubic feet (1,336 liters).

“With 9 percent market growth in small hatchbacks last year, it’s the perfect time to bring the Cruze Hatch to America,” said Alan Batey, president, General Motors North America and Global Chevrolet. “As Cruze continues to set the tone for Chevrolet globally, it articulates the brand promise of offering cars with the latest technologies, more features and greater efficiency, performance and safety with fresh, distinctive styling.”

An all-new, more rigid and lighter architecture is the Cruze’s foundation for driving dynamism, while also playing a significant role in safety and efficiency. It is more than 200 pounds (91 kg) lighter than the previous-generation model due largely to a body structure that is 100 pounds lighter and an engine that’s 44 pounds (20 kg) lighter.

The Cruze lineup in North America is offered in L, LS, LT and Premier – and a more expressive RS package, featuring unique front and rear fascias, rocker panels, rear spoiler, fog lamps and – on the Premier model – 18-inch wheels.

The 2017 Cruze Hatch will be offered in LT and Premier trims, and with the RS package.

KEY FEATURES

  • Segment-exclusive standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility via the MyLink radio systems and available 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot

  • 35 percent of Cruze customers are new to Chevrolet
  • In the U.S., Cruze is the segment’s second-best seller to customers under 25.

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Offers Drivers More Bang for Their Buck at the Pump

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Offers Drivers More Bang for Their Buck at the Pump

Elizabeth City, NC – The Tahoe is EPA-estimated at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway (2WD) – a nearly 10-percent increase in highway mileage over the previous models and 7-percent greater city mileage.

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe’s standard 5.3L V-8 engine, rated at 355 horsepower (265 kW) and 383 lb.-ft. of torque (519 Nm), features state-of-the-art technologies including direct injection, cylinder deactivation, continuously variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system, all designed to make the most of power, torque and efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions.

Improved engine mounts, electronic throttle control, adaptive exhaust systems, improved aerodynamics and other technologies help the engine operate in four-cylinder mode longer with Active Fuel Management, further increasing efficiency.

“If you thought that SUVs could not save on gas mileage, think again,” said Terrance Whidbee of Performance Chevrolet. “The all-new Tahoe offers large SUV customers the most fuel efficient option in Elizabeth City North Carolina.”

A Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is paired with the new 5.3L engine and contributes to efficiency with reduced engine speed on the highway. It also features TapShift control, Tow/Haul mode and Auto Grade Braking.

Advanced combustion system

At the heart of the new EcoTec3 engine family is an advanced combustion system that maximizes the potential of the direct fuel injection system, cylinder deactivation, continuously variable valve timing and other technologies to ensure a strong balance between on-demand performance and real-world efficiency.

The ability to more precisely control combustion also enables the new engine to run with a higher compression ratio, one of the best ways to simultaneously increase power and efficiency.

This increased efficiency can now be maintained over a broader range of operating conditions. For example, when towing a trailer on a steep grade on a hot day, the advanced combustion system can reduce the need to trim back spark advance to control detonation, helping maintain efficiency with confident performance.

Direct injection and Active Fuel Management

The 5.3L’s direct fuel injection system precisely meters fuel directly into the cylinders, helping optimize combustion over a broad range of conditions. An all-new cylinder head design supports the fuel system and it’s complemented by a new, sculpted piston head developed to direct the injector’s fuel spray for better mixing and more complete combustion.

To further enhance combustion, the intake and exhaust valve positions have been switched from the previous Small Block engine design, and the spark plug angle has been revised to move the electrode now closer to the center of the chamber to support optimal combustion.

In certain light-load driving conditions, half of the 5.3L’s injectors quit spraying fuel, effectively turning the engine into a V-4 to help increase efficiency. This cylinder deactivation technology, also known as Active Fuel Management, is standard and uses oil pressure, controlled by the powertrain control module, to deactivate the lifters on selected cylinders, closes the valves for those cylinders, and seamlessly reactivates the cylinders when the driver demands greater power. The transition takes less than 20 milliseconds and is virtually imperceptible.

Additional features on the EcoTec3 5.3L include:

·        Weight-saving aluminum engine block

·        Efficiency-enhancing oiling system

·        Oil-jet piston cooling

·        PCV-integrated rocker covers

·        “Saw-cut” exhaust manifolds

·        Cooling system, humidity sensor and more

Small Block legacy

The first Small Block V-8 was introduced in 1955 – a 4.3L V-8 that was an option in the Suburban. It was rated at 145 horsepower and 238 lb.-ft. of torque. Sixty years later, the new EcoTec3 5.3L Small Block produces 245 percent more horsepower and 61 percent more torque from only 23 percent greater engine displacement.

The new 5.3L is built on a foundation of more than 100 million Small Block engines and four generations that came before it. Engines based on the architecture are typically smaller and lighter than competitors’ engines with overhead camshafts, and typically have lower friction – attributes that can enhance efficiency.

2014 Impala Focuses on Crash Avoidance From All Angles

Elizabeth City, NC – The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala is the latest addition to Chevrolet’s passenger car lineup and provides first-ever safety technologies for the global brand.

Unveiled earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, the Impala leads the full-size segment with 10 standard air bags and boasts numerous active safety systems. While passive safety systems, such as air bags and seat belts, protect occupants in the event of a crash, active safety systems are designed to prevent a crash in the first place through the use of sounds, visual warnings and automated actions.

Here are the active safety features on the 2014 Impala designed to help drivers avoid crashes:

  • Full-speed-range adaptive cruise control – Radar technology senses ahead and adjusts the Impala’s speed from a complete stop to full acceleration. It is the first application in a Chevrolet.
  • Collision mitigation braking – Another Chevy first: Radar technology detects a possible crash threat and alerts the driver. If the driver does not appear to react quickly enough or doesn’t react at all, this feature intervenes to apply the brakes in an effort to avoid the crash.
  • Forward collision alert – Camera technology detects a possible crash threat and alerts the driver visually and audibly, giving him or her time to stop and/or change course. If a crash occurs, the Impala is equipped with OnStar, and a specially trained advisor is connected to the vehicle. If the driver requests help or can’t answer, emergency responders are sent to the precise GPS location.
  • Lane departure warning – A camera-based lane-detection system identifies traffic lane markings and provides audible alerts in cases of unintended lane changes.
  • Side blind zone alert – Using radar sensors on both sides of the vehicle, the system “looks” for other vehicles in the blind zone areas of the Impala and indicates their presence with LED-lit symbols in the outside mirrors.
  • · Rear cross traffic alert – Based on the radar sensors of side blind zone alert, it warns the driver of vehicles in traffic when backing out of a parking spot – including angled parking. Visual and audible alerts are triggered if moving vehicles are detected.
  • Rear vision camera with dynamic guidelines – With a display in the center stack infotainment system, the camera provides a view of objects directly behind the Impala, while the dynamic guidelines provide a reference that helps make parking and other maneuvers easier.
  • Rear park assist – Uses sensors in the rear bumper to detect objects directly behind the vehicle and provides an alert for the driver.
  • Brake pre-fill feature – Another Chevy first: Radar technology detects a possible crash threat and the system increases the hydraulic pressure in the brake lines, anticipating a driver’s hard braking. This quickens the response time and shortens stopping distances (included with 20-inch wheels on uplevel models).
  • Hill hold/start assist – On hills, applies the brakes for about 1.5 seconds to prevent the car from rolling when the driver moves his or her foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal.

Chevrolet Equinox Offers Advantages of Universal Design

Elizabeth City, NC – Getting into the Chevrolet Equinox is so easy, Elizabeth City owners may never notice. The small crossover’s narrow rocker panels require minimal reach to step over, and its seat height requires minimal bending. Equinox’s ease of entry is just one example of Chevrolet’s use of universal design – an approach that makes products of all kinds work for as many people as possible.

Consumers experience universal design every day, from sidewalk ramps to lever-style door handles. For most people, universal design adds convenience, but for Elizabeth City area people with limited range of motion it can be a difference maker. A rear vision camera, programmable liftgate and easy-to-use touch screen controls are examples of Equinox’s ease-of-use features.

Ease of use is increasingly important to car design as automakers adapt to changing consumer demographics. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 65-and-older population is projected to grow to more than 71 million by 2030, and will account for 20 percent of the nation’s citizenry. That means more car buyers will be dealing with age-related issues that affect range of motion, eyesight, hearing, reflexes and cognition – issues that General Motors has studied in depth and has already begun to address in many of its vehicles such as the Equinox.

“While the use of universal design, in the making of the Chevrolet Equinox provides many benefits for Performance Chevrolet’s older customers, it really makes life easier for all users, regardless of age,” said Jimmie Ritter, Certified Sales Professional of Performance Chevrolet.

For automakers, the rising number of older car buyers is impossible to ignore, because Baby Boomers, the generation now reaching retirement age, buy the most new vehicles. According to a recent study from J.D. Power and AARP, people ages 50 and older now buy more than six of every 10 new vehicles sold – up 39 percent since 2001.

“Boomers want vehicles that help them maintain their vitality by adapting to their needs, rather than the other way around,” said Matt Thornhill, founder and president of the Boomer Project, a marketing research firm in Richmond, Va. “If a car screams that it was designed ‘for old people,’ Boomers will hate it and so will younger buyers. Boomers want vehicle designs that reflect their youthful vitality and aspirations, even if they are dealing with age-related issues.”

One of the reasons why operating a vehicle becomes more difficult with age is diminished range of motion. Equinox’s blind spot mirrors and wraparound rear side glass can be useful to drivers, regardless of their age, who may have difficulty looking over their shoulder when making a lane change. In addition, the crossover’s rear-vision camera, standard on 2013 Equinox LT and LTZ models, helps all drivers identify objects behind the vehicle when backing up.

Equinox’s rear programmable power liftgate, standard on LTZ and available on 2LT, also helps customers of any age who have limited range of motion, but also is convenient for anyone whose hands are full.

Another example of Equinox’s universal design advantages is its segment-leading multi-flex rear seat that allows parents to move the rear seat closer for easier and safer access to their children. The additional leg room afforded by the multi-flex rear seat allows up to five people to sit comfortably in the vehicle.

Also in easy reach are Equinox’s center stack radio controls, with redundant controls on the steering wheel that help drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Additionally, Equinox’s MyLink infotainment system, standard on 2013 LT and LTZ models, has a seven-inch color touch screen display with easy-to-understand icons that allows users to integrate their Bluetooth®-paired smartphone with their vehicle so they can stow their phone and safely use the hands-free voice control system to listen to music files and place calls to stored contacts. Users also can access their mobile phone book on the display.
